Easter weather update as Scotland's sunny spells to turn into 'blustery showers'

Scots enjoying the sunny weather will be disappointed to hear that conditions are set to turn wet and windy this weekend.

The Met Office has said dry and clear skies seen across the country will come to a halt on Easter Sunday evening, making for an unsettled week ahead.

High pressure which has been responsible for fine conditions, will move away to the east, to be replaced by a westerly Atlantic regime, bringing periods of winds and rain. Forecasters say this change will start over Northern Ireland then pass over Scotland later that day.

WX Charts show the Atlantic regime starting to move over Northern Ireland on Sunday afternoon, then covering most of Scotland by Sunday night.

Saturday's report predicts plenty of sun for most, bringing "pleasantly" warm temperatures this afternoon. Easter Sunday will see Scotland maintain dry and clear conditions, before developing into blustery showers later that evening.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “A change is on the way for the UK weather as the dry, settled, and in places warm conditions are replaced by a more unsettled weather pattern from Sunday afternoon.

“This change happens first for Northern Ireland and Scotland, where Sunday afternoon rain will be replaced by blustery showers overnight and into Monday. Elsewhere, a mainly dry, but increasingly cloudy day on Sunday, with rain arriving for parts of Wales and southwest England by evening.

"Rain spreads east across other areas into Monday, with showers following.”

Moving to next week, wet and windy weather will continue thanks to fronts bringing bouts of rain on Monday and Tuesday. This will continue until Wednesday, due to a developing low-pressure system.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates said: “The focus for the medium-range forecast is a low-pressure system that’s likely to develop in the Atlantic potentially bringing a period of high winds and heavy rain late on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

“While the precise location and depth of this low-pressure system is subject to some uncertainty, there’s a distinct possibility of some disruptive wind for parts of the UK - as well as potential for heavy rainfall and even some snow - though the latter probably confined to high ground in the north.

"Warnings may need to be issued once we have greater confidence in the depth and track of the low."
