Tesco has announced the launch of the UK’s first hot cross bun café in central London to honour the Easter staple.

The rising popularity of the spring sweet treat has inspired a wide menu of brunch, afternoon tea options and a five-course dinner in the evening from April 5.

From £5 per person, the innovative takes on the classic pastry include a vegan ‘Hot Cross Bangers and Smash’, Hot Cross Scones, and Hot Cross Bun Steak Tartare.

If that’s not enough customers nationwide will be able to enjoy the limited edition Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Sandwich at the Shoreditch pop-up.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available as well as non-alcoholic drinks.

The rest of the nation won’t be missing out, with items from the menu being sold at Tesco in-store cafés from April 4 to April 17.

A spring garden flower wall will offer an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity along with a dedicated selfie zone and an Easter throne to take your place at this Easter feast.

Children can enjoy goody bags and colour-in menus over a family brunch before the restaurant transforms into an adult-only dining experience until late.

The supermarket’s charity partner, the Trussell Trust, will use all profits from the café towards emergency food and support for people in crisis.

Bookings can be made via OpenTable from Friday 18 March, but a limited number of tables are available for walk-ins.

The café launch comes amidst a rise in popularity of the hot cross bun – sales were up for the sweet treat by 20% in 2021 and predicted to rise further this year.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco Chief Customer Officer said: “After two years of pared back celebrations, we wanted to do something special to bring people together this Easter.

“The hot cross bun is very much having a moment in 2022, as reflected by our focus on quality at an affordable price along with innovation in this year’s ranges.”
