EastEnders viewers 'cringe' at Prince Charles and Camilla cameo in Albert Square

EastEnders viewers were less than impressed with the 'cringeworthy' cameo from Prince Charle s and Camilla.

The couple appeared on the special episode of the BBC soap on the first day of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend - and fans weren't enamoured by the royals trip to Albert Square.

After the episode aired, viewers took to social media to vent about the 'weird' cameo.

The special scene saw Prince Charles and Camilla walk through the market as Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer, introduced them to various Walford residents, writes the Mirror.

The Duchess of Cornwall spoke with soap favourite Patrick Truman, as she said to him: "How are you? You've got a nice little bottle there..."

Patrick laughed and replied: "It's rum, specially from Trinidad, and as they say, 'a drop a day keeps the doctor away'."

Laughing at his comment, Camilla admitted: "I tried that in Trinidad, pretty good," to which he responded: "You tried it in Trinidad? And you're still standing ma'am!"

He then offered: "Before you leave ma'am, can I interest you in a little..." as he suggested a tipple and Camilla quickly replied: "You can," as onlookers cheered.

Elsewhere in the episode, Mick's wife Linda was seen walking across the Square with Prince Charles as Martin Fowler politely said to him: "If you wanna take any with ya for the journey..." before excitedly running over to Sharon Watts.

"How amazing was that?" he asked her as she replied: "I can't believe it. Do you think I could ask a favour?"

Martin then told her: "Well, it takes a princess to ask a Duchess don't it? Good luck!"

Soap fans immediately took to Twitter to comment on the royal appearance in Walford.

One person said: "I'm embarrassed for them all #EastEnders "

Another tweeted: "This is the most weirdest thing I’ve seen in years. #EastEnders #PlatinumJubilee "

EastEnders is set for exciting scenes as the hit BBC One soap will be changing its iconic theme tune to celebrate Prince Charles and Camilla 's debut (BBC)

A third person wrote: "This is knocking me sick, all these actors being coerced into having to meet Charles and Camilla for some very clumsy exposition. Cringing myself inside out here"

And a fourth viewer added: "This is so effing cringe! #EastEnders "

It was confirmed last month that the royal couple would be making a special appearance in the much-loved BBC soap.

The special scenes were filmed back in March when Charles and Camilla visited the set to meet the cast and crew of the long-running series.

The Jubilee episode of EastEnders closed with a royal adaptation of the soap’s classic theme tune.

EastEnders' Jubilee-themed tune was written by Simon May, who composed the original piece.

May has written other variations of the classic BBC soap opera theme tune, including one for one of the show’s creators Julia Smith and another for Barbara Windsor’s farewell episode as Peggy Mitchell.
