EastEnders viewers left fuming as they complain about Sharon's latest storyline

EastEnders viewers have been left fuming with Sharon Watts' latest antics on the BBC soap.

Fans of the long-running soap opera have all made the same observation and are all saying the exact same thing about the show's script writers, following Sharon's latest attempts to win back the heart of Phil Mitchell falling flat during a recent episode.

EastEnders returned to our screens on Monday [September 12], albeit on BBC 2, as the nation's state broadcaster continues its coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the upcoming funeral on Monday September 19 - with many popular shows and soaps like EastEnders removed from the schedule last week.

Played by actress Letitia Dean, Sharon Watts has been an on-off resident of Albert Square since first appearing on EastEnders when the soap premiered way back in 1985 - last returning in 2012 after a six-year stint away and staying put ever since.

Over the years, Sharon - daughter of Den (Leslie Grantham) and Angie Watts - has been involved in some of the soap's biggest storylines and her fiery on-off romances with the Mitchell brothers and others have rumbled on for decades.

The blonde beauty has been married to both Grant and Phil Mitchell but has recently been committed to trying to win one of the brothers back, as Phil prepares to tie the knot with Kat Slater.

Sharon was recently knocked back by the mechanic, as he told her he needs a fresh start in life and is still planning to marry Kat despite his ex-wife's desperate pleas to give their romance yet another shot.

Taking to message boards on Digital Spy, EastEnders fans united in their disappointment in Sharon's latest antics, and questioned why her character is not allowed to develop further than her romance with Phil.

One viewer wrote: "Have the producers got nothing else to give her?

"It's always about her having a realisation when one of her exes are about to get married again and having realisations even during her youth when she would sleep with both Grant and Phil, ruining another marriage or trying to be step in for ego issues and nothing else?"

Another agreed, adding: "Quite reductive and unfair to just have her exist as a character, solely fall in and out of love with Phil."

"I think it's a pretty consistent character trait of Sharon's that she always wants to have her cake and eat it," a third quipped, as the debated rumbled on.

With the return of Alfie Moon (Shane Ritchie) to Albert Square, it's likely Sharon's desire to win Phil back may not be the only drama he faces as he prepares to marry Kat.

In Tuesday's episode (September 13), Alfie threw a few spanners in the works for his ex's wedding as he'd turned up after being told by the twins about Phil's temper.

While Kat made it clear she is still committed to Phil, viewers have been left wondering if her head could be turned before the big day.
