EastEnders star Samantha Womack unrecognisable in Eurovision flashback after representing UK 30 years ago

Thirty years ago, EastEnders star Samantha Womack took to the stage to represent at Eurovision in Rome and how fans still remember it three decades on.

Today, ahead of this weekend's Eurovision final, Samantha joined Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain to talk about the time she performed 'A Message To Your Heart' to over 55 million people.

In 1991, Samantha who was Samantha Janus at the time, represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in Rome with the song A Message To Your Heart, but finished in joint 10th place with Ireland.

And speaking about the blast from the past, Ed introduced Samantha and spoke about her surprise performance of her song this week ahead of the final this weekend.

Samantha said: "I was in Liverpool yesterday and it was wonderful. I was terrified I didn't think anyone would remember. Fans organised this huge prepress to the Eurovision and you know I went on stage and they knew all the words! I honestly had the best time!"

Susanna said: "You must have been a teenager?"

Samantha replied: "I think I was 18 or 19, it was terrifying as the average was like 55 million viewers. So they tell you that before you go on stage. It was a bit like reclaiming the beauty of it without the pressure. Liverpool is on fire at the moment, it's so exciting, the whole city is alive and pulsating at the moment."

This year, the UK is being represented by Mae Muller. Mae is set to perform at the iconic singing contest with her track I Wrote A Song.

Glasgow just missed out on hosting the Eurovision competition this year and instead Liverpool will host after the UK was chosen to host the competition on behalf of war-torn Ukraine.

The Eurovision final is on this Saturday on BBC One at 8pm.

Graham Norton, Hannah Waddingham, Alesha Dixon and Julia Sanina will present the 67th annual song competition from Liverpool.

The show also features performances from last year's first and second place acts, Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra and the UK's Sam Ryder, as well as a celebration of the host city's incredible contribution to the world of pop music featuring six past Eurovision winners - including Liverpool's own Sonia.
