East Lothian dinner ladies set up pizza business from back of bright yellow horsebox

Two dinner ladies from East Lothian have hit upon a novel idea to make some extra dough in their spare time.

During the week, friends Laura Robertson and Deborah Stenhouse work together in the kitchen at Yester Primary school in Gifford.

But at the weekend the pair saddle up and head out in their bright yellow horsebox, selling their range of homemade pizzas.

Kitchen supervisor Deborah and catering assistant Laura started their part-time mobile catering business earlier this year after deciding they wanted to do something exciting with their spare time.

Speaking about how the new business came about, Laura explained: “I'd always wanted a snack van and Debbie and I had discussed that before but the horsebox business came up for sale, so it was fate, it was meant to be."

And, in a nod to 90s girl power, the pair had the perfect name for their new business; The Slice Girls.

It took a few months to get their operation up and running and the duo say the whole venture has certainly spiced up their lives.

Now at weekends, they cook fresh pizza in a wood-fired oven in the back of the converted vintage 1970s Rice horsebox.

The pair are often found galloping around the lanes of East Lothian and will then park up in small villages like East Saltoun, Gifford, Ormiston, Athelstaneford, Prestonpans, Haddington, and Gullane.

They also cater for a wide range of events including gala days, weddings, and even, recently, a spice girl-themed hen do.

The entrepreneurs stated that the schoolchildren at Yester Primary school all love the fact that their dinner ladies are also now pizza specialists, and they are often spotted by the pupils when they are out on tour.

Two of Debbie’s four grandchildren attend Yester primary and they are huge fans of their granny’s pizza, saying the school versions are not a patch on the Slice Girls.

Laura’s three grown-up children all think their mum’s new business is brilliant, although that might be down to lots of free pizzas.

Debbie explains it is not all hard work: “It doesn't feel like a job or a chore we are out meeting amazing people.

"We just absolutely love it and we work so well together and we make it fun and have a laugh.”

Though they've made a success of the start of their fledgling business, Debbie added that they haven’t made their fortune just yet: “We are not millionaires yet, but I think it's much more successful than we thought it would be. “

They plan to have a break over Christmas but will be back in the New Year doing pop-ups around East Lothian.

They post their location on their Facebook page so customers track them down to get a 'pizza the action'.
