An Independent councillor has called for pedestrian crossings to be installed along busy East Kilbride roads.
East Kilbride West representative, David Watson, has called for safe pedestrian crossings to be installed along Eaglesham Road, Greenhills Road and Redwood Drive.
Councillor Watson said that crossings were agreed as part of a previous planning application when plans were submitted for a Retail Warehouse Park at Land at Redwood Crescent, Peel Park. This application is now not going ahead.
It was agreed that controlled pedestrian crossing facilities would be installed at: Eaglesham Road east of Greenhills Road at the extension of the existing remote footway from Blaeshill Road; Redwood Drive approximately 130m north of the road channel line of Eaglesham Road and Greenhills Road at the existing remote footways which provide a link between Berridale and Blaeshill Road.
Councillor Watson told Lanarkshire Live : "House building continues in the Jackton at the Community Growth Area with more and more houses coming on line.
"These crossings should be installed sooner rather than later.
"When these developments go through planning there is always plenty of talk about active travel plans encouraging walking and cycling.
"For this to be successful it needs more than words, it requires safe road crossing points for pedestrians.
"Eaglesham Road and Greenhills Road are getting busier with traffic, so if we want to encourage residents to walk safe crossing points are necessary."
He added: "Although the site where the Retail Warehouse Park was to be located is now the proposed site for the Hairmyres station Park and Ride facility, we shouldn’t wait until this is agreed and goes through planning.
"There also should be a pedestrian crossing on Eaglesham Road at Lidl to allow safe crossing to the St James Centre retail area.
"The paths from the Jackton area are also walking routes for schools, local shops at the St James Centre, train station and hospital."
But Councillor Watson has welcomed suggestions that the speed limit on Eaglesham Road and Redwood Drive will be looked at, reducing the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph.
Colin Park from SLC said: “We are aware of the concerns raised.
“Many are development led and we will look to secure these are early as possible through the development of existing or future planning consent including the proposals associated with Hairmyres Station redevelopment.
“Notwithstanding this, we are planning to undertake a pedestrian and vehicular survey on Eaglesham Road near to the St. James Centre retail area later this month to better understand changing demands in the area and in turn the relative priority for investment.
“We will also shortly begin the statutory process associated with the promotion of a new Traffic Regulation Order to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on Eaglesham Drive and Redwood Road.
