Kevin Rutkiewicz admits sloppiness slipped into East Kilbride’s play as they suffered a shock defeat at home to Edinburgh University.
The students gave Kilby a lesson in finishing as they were clinical with their chances at K-Park, taking a 1-0 lead before then coming from 2-1 down to win the match 3-2 on Saturday.
EK were a goal down after 15 minutes but rallied after the break when Reece McGuire pulled them level six minutes into the second half.
McGuire struck again in the 64th minute and it looked like the hosts would take control of the game.
But Uni had other ideas, netting twice in two minutes with a quarter of the game remaining and seeing it out to inflict EK’s second defeat this season.
Rutkiewicz said: “We lost the first goal against the run of play, then were the better team for most of the game.
“But when Edinburgh scored the equaliser at 2-2 I thought they were the better team from thereon in and deserved their win.
“We had chances ourselves but you’ve got to take them. I’m not happy with the level of the performance.
“We were sloppy, a bit wasteful, but the show must go on.
“I’ve got to look at the game in isolation to see what went wrong on the day, but we’ve also got to have a bit of context in terms of the start to the season we’ve had and not get too downhearted by it.”
That, coupled with a 1-1 draw last Tuesday night at home to East Stirling, sees Kilby slip to second in the Lowland League on goal difference from Rangers B, while they sit four points clear of third-place Caledonian Braves.
A trip to Lanark United in the second round of the South Challenge Cup now awaits EK and Rutkiewicz added: "It’s cup action for us for the next couple of weeks and we approach them fully aware of all the trap doors and dangers of playing the so-called lesser teams.”
