East Belfast power cuts due to equipment failure affecting over 3,000 customers

A number of power cuts in part of East Belfast are currently affecting over 3,000 customers.

The first of the faults were reported in the Sydenham area at around 9.44pm on Tuesday, January 3, with Northern Ireland Electricity saying the outage is due to an "equipment failure."

Around 3,169 customers are currently impacted by the outage, which is expected to be restored by 1am on Wednesday, January 4.

A number of outages have been reported in the area surrounding the Old Holywood Road, close to Belfast City Airport, leading towards the Upper Newtownards Road.

On their website, Northern Ireland Electricity said: "We are aware that some people are without power in your area and are assessing the extent of the fault.

"We have logged a fault for this area and will be assigning a repair team as soon as possible.

"The fault is due to equipment failure."

East Belfast DUP MP Gavin Robinson tweeted: "I’ve spoken with Power NI this evening as a large number of homes in East Belfast are without power.

"This area includes Castlehill, Garnerville, Belmont, Sydenham, Tweskard, Massey, Old Holywood Road and Knocknagoney. Engineers are on route but the ET for restoration is 1am."

In a tweet on Wednesday morning, Northern Ireland Electricity added: "We were aware of a widespread issue in Belfast last night, particularly in the BT4 area.

"Supply should have been restored at approximately 23:00-00:00. If anyone is still off supply, please give us a call on 03457 643 643. Apologies for the interruption."
