East Ayrshire care centre's delight as it celebrates glowing report from inspection team

Staff at an Ayrshire care centre are celebrating an almost flawless report from the Care Inspectorate.

Dalmellington Care Centre, in Waterside Street, Dalmellington, was graded as ‘very good’ in its ability to support people’s wellbeing, and in its leadership.

The care centre provides care and support for 61 elderly people, although there were 60 people living in the home at the time of the inspection.

According to the Care Inspectorate report, staff were “very good” at supporting people to maintain links with their family and friends and people “spoke highly” of the skills and commitment of staff.

In addition, people living in the home were “very complimentary” about the food served and the variety of menu choices.

The report goes on: “Staff understood the importance of supporting people living with dementia in a calm manner and at an unrushed pace.

“And the management team showed a commitment to involve the people who use the home to inform service development and improvement.”

The Care Inspectorate said it found “significant strengths” in aspects of the care provided and how these supported “positive outcomes” for people.

An extract from the inspection report also praised the staff, saying: “Staff promoted a responsive person-centred approach to care. They were very familiar with the needs of individuals, their choices and preferences. Staff showed consideration and kindness towards the people they supported.

“We saw warm relationships between people living in the home and the staff. People told us that the home had a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

“One person said, “This is a lovely place to live, I’m comfortable and feel very at home.”

Cleanliness was of a “high standard” and “very good systems” were in place to assess and check the cleanliness of the home in terms of infection prevention and control.

There was also praise for the management, with the report adding: “There was a culture of continuous service improvement at Dalmellington care centre.

“This was driven by the manager who led staff by example and used effective systems to assess the quality-of-service provision.

“The manager had a particularly good understanding of how best to drive improvement in the home and welcomed involvement from people who used the service. There was good partnership working in the home between management and staff.”
