Earthquake Tremors Jolt Kolkata, No Damage Reported

According to preliminary reports, there have been no immediate accounts of casualties or property damage. The tremors lasted only a few seconds but were strong enough to be felt in multiple parts of the city, including high-rise residential complexes and busy marketplaces.

Residents from several neighbourhoods reported swaying ceiling fans, shaking furniture, and rattling windows. The impact was particularly noticeable in multi-storey buildings, where occupants said the shaking felt more intense.

As the tremors subsided, many people rushed out of their homes and offices as a precautionary measure. Videos and images circulating on social media showed residents gathering in open spaces, while others shared screenshots of earthquake alerts received on their mobile phones.

This is not the first such incident in recent weeks. Earlier this month, on February 3, tremors were felt across Kolkata following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake. Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had then stated that the epicentre was located in Myanmar.

“The epicentre of the earthquake was somewhere in Myanmar. We are ascertaining the details and trying to pinpoint its exact location. It had a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale,” an IMD official told PTI at the time.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, while residents have been advised to remain calm and follow standard safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
