An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 on the Ritcher's scale has reportedly occurred at a depth of 20 kilometres in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday at 1:10 am., according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The epicentre was located between Nellore and Gudur, about 25 kilometres south of Nellore city and 85 kilometres northeast of Tirupati, which are in the moderate-intensity seismic zone (Zone III). It is about 230 kilometres from Chennai which also lies in Zone III. No 'Felt Reports' were registered with the NCS portal yet by the public.

Three Earthquakes of similar intensity were reported in the recent past close to the epicentre in Nellore, as per the seismological data of NCS. On December 23, 2021, a quake of 3.5 magnitude occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres near Palamaneru in the Chittoor district. Similarly, On November 29, 2021, a quake of 3.6 magnitude occurred at a depth of 25 kilometres near Kuppam and on April 11, 2021, another quake of magnitude 3 occurred in Tamil Nadu near Kuppam.
On August 24, 2021, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres in the Bay of Bengal about 300 kilometres off Nellore coast.
On November 14, 2021, a minor quake of magnitude 1.8 occurred in the Bay of Bengal off the Visakhapatnam coast at a depth of five kilometres, and tremors were felt in Vizag which is in zone II, the lowest active seismic zone in the country.
