'Earthquake' hits Scotland amid reports of 'ground shaking' in Oban and Mull

AN earthquake is understood to have hit Scotland, near Kinloch in the Highlands with reports of the “ground shaking” near Oban and Mull.

The British Geological Survey confirmed a 2.9 magnitude quake with a depth of 24km.

A second website, Volcano Discovery, also said a “possible earthquake might have occurred near Oban” on Sunday night around 8.45pm.

A post on the website read: “Details of the quake (if it is one) are so far unknown until confirmed by a seismic agency, but the event was reported felt.”

Locals also said they had felt shaking with one member of a local Facebook group asking if anyone could feel shaking.

One person replied: “Yes, quite a rumble and shake.”

Another said they thought it was a “neighbours washing machine” and a third said they could hear “glasses shaking in the cupboards a bit”.

A fourth social media user posted: “I heard an unfamiliar noise and wondered what it was. Taynuilt.”

Somebody else commented that they had heard a “long rumble” in Oban.
