The Indian Premier League campaign of Ricky Ponting's Delhi Capitals is over after Tim David's power hitting sent them to defeat to bottom-of-the-league Mumbai Indians.
The loss meant joy for Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood as their Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise took the final playoff spot instead.
David Warner and Mitch Marsh had both been in good form, but Warner made five and Marsh perished to a golden duck as Capitals could post only 7-159 off their 20 overs.
Warner was caught by Jasprit Bumrah off fellow Aussie Daniel Sams (1-30). Bumrah then did damage with this bowling taking 3-25 off his four overs, including the first-ball dismissal of Marsh.
Delhi restricted Mumbai to 2-92 at the end of 14 overs, requiring a 68 runs in six overs. But Singaporean-Australian David smashed 34 off 11 balls, with four sixes, enabling Mumbai to get over the line with five balls to spare.
Delhi should have been out for nought having feathered an edge off Shardul Thakur to Rishabh Pant. But the wicketkeeper-captain decided against appealing to DRS when his appeal was turned down.
Replays showed David edged the ball.
Bangalore will face Marcus Stoinis's Lucknow Super Giants in Wednesday's eliminator game, while Gujarat Titans will take on Rajasthan Royals in Tuesday's playoff match.
