Early Aston Villa injury news for Leeds United clash as defensive duo's involvement unclear

Leeds United will be looking to end their five-match losing run when they host Aston Villa at Elland Road on Thursday.

The Whites have not picked up a single point in the league since the 3-3 draw with Villa last month, which sees them now just two points clear of the relegation zone.

New manager Jesse Marsch took charge of his game at Leeds since his appointment last week against Leicester City on Saturday, where they were unfortunate to be beaten 1-0.

Meanwhile, opponents Aston Villa have rediscovered their form under Steven Gerrard in recent weeks with two impressive wins in a row.

The Villains defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 in their last away match, before thumping Southampton 4-0 at Villa Park last weekend.

Here is a look at some of the early team news from the Villa camp.

Lucas Digne – Covid

Left-back Lucas Digne’s involvement remains in doubt after he missed the win over the Saints due to Covid-19.

It is so far unclear which day his Covid-19 test came back as positive so there is no indication either way whether he will return for the trip to West Yorkshire.

Ezri Konsa – Covid

Fellow defender Ezri Konsa was also absent against Southampton for the same reason as Digne and so his availability remains uncertain at this stage.

Marvelous Nakamba – knee

Midfielder Marvelous Nakamba remains out for Villa due to a knee injury he picked up in the defeat to Liverpool earlier this month.

Nakamba, though, could return after the international break for Gerrard’s men after his positive update last week.

Gerrard (Mar 4): “Marvelous is three to four weeks away from a return.”

Carney Chukwuemeka – unknown

One player on the injury list who is set to return for Villa against Leeds is midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Chukwuemeka has missed each of the last two games but Gerrard is expecting him to return at Elland Road.

Gerrard (Mar 4): “He was back on the pitch with the physio yesterday and today, but this game [Southampton] will come too soon. We’re hoping to have him available for Leeds on Thursday.”
