As the Eagles prepare for the stretch run of the 2023 season, the organization made a surprising roster move Friday ahead of Sunday’s Week 12 game against the Bills.
Philadelphia has elected to waive defensive end Derek Barnett, a former first-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Barnett, 27, is expected to find a new team soon, per Schefter, with the veteran pass-rusher already drawing interest around the NFL.
The 14th pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Barnett has spent his entire seven-year career with the Eagles, accumulating 150 tackles and 21 1/2 sacks across 73 games (45 starts).
Barnett has appeared in just eight games this season, recording three tackles after returning from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 1 of the 2022 campaign. Prior to his injury, Barnett played a key role along the Eagles’ vaunted defensive line, and he became part of team lore after a pivotal fumble recovery in the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory in February 2018.
