Eagles rank 6th among NFC teams in 2023 draft capital

The 2023 NFL Draft is less than a month away, and the Eagles, like 31 other teams across the league, are starting to assess potential blockbuster trades that can maximize the value of a deep pool of prospects.

The details of any trade can be found in the value of the moves, using the NFL’s trade value chart.

What is the ‘trade value chart?

Back when he was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and building a dynasty, Jimmy Johnson developed a value chart that assigns every pick in the draft with a specific point value, making it easier for him and front-office types to compare the relative value of draft picks in different rounds.

A system formulated by personnel guru Gil Brandt and the former Cowboys head coach in the 1990s, the chart helps measure the value of draft assets and helps negotiate trades.

Named the “Dallas Draft Picks Value Chart,” executives from around the league swear by Johnson’s grading system for picks and refer to it before making a final decision on trade proposals or offers.

Using the trade value chart from DraftTek, Philadelphia has the 6th best draft capital among NFC teams, and they have the best draft capital in the NFC East despite having the least amount of picks.

Here’s where all 16 NFC teams stand with the draft fast approaching.

Philadelphia has six draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, one of the few in the NFL.

The picks they have are precious, with four in the top 100. And that includes two first-round choices, one of which is inside the top half of Round 1.

The Eagles own the New Orleans Saints’ first-round pick in 2023. That pick was acquired in a draft-day trade last year that sent picks Nos. 16, 19, and 194 to the Saints in exchange for picks Nos. 18, 101, 237, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick.

The Saints have eight draft picks in 2023, including a first-round selection they acquired from the Broncos in exchange for the rights to head coach Sean Payton.

They do not have their first-round pick in 2023, however. New Orleans traded that pick last year to the Eagles. Philadelphia sent picks 16 and 19 in the 2022 NFL Draft to the Saints in exchange for a package that included the 18th overall selection in 2022, New Orleans’ first-round pick in 2023, and a second-round pick in 2024.

The Saints traded the 16th overall pick in 2022 to the Washington Commanders for the 11th overall pick, where they selected WR Chris Olave. They used the 19th selection in 2022 to draft OT Trevor Penning.

Through the compensatory pick process, the Cowboys were awarded two additional selections in the fifth round and one selection in the sixth round. One of those fifth-round compensatory selections was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Dallas’ original fifth-round pick (161) was traded to the Houston Texans for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, along with a 2024 sixth-round pick. Meanwhile, Dallas’ original sixth-rounder was sent to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins in October.

The Rams have 11 draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Three of those selections — a second-rounder and two third-rounders — reside on Day 2. The rest are Day 3 picks, all outside of the top 150.

The Rams don’t have a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. It’ll be the seventh straight NFL draft in which the Rams haven’t had a Round 1 pick.

The Rams traded away their 2022 and 2023 first-rounders to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford in the 2021 offseason. The Lions also took on former Rams QB Jared Goff in the deal — an acquisition that was, at the time, deemed more of a cap handcuff, given Goff’s regression late in his Rams career.
