Dylan Eagleson wins rare gold medal for Northern Ireland at Commonwealth Games

Dylan Eagleson has struck gold for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth games after defeating Abraha Mensah of Ghana in the final of the men's bantamweight division.

The 19-year old from Bangor in County Antrim lost the first round to Mensah before producing two brilliant rounds to secure the comeback victory.

Michael Conlan, fresh from his dominating victory over Miguel Marriaga in Belfast last night, was one of the first to take to Twitter and congratulate the youngster.

"Dylan Eagleson 19 year old Commonwealth games champion, fantastic performance to pull it back after losing the first round. Well done champ," read Conlan's tweet.

Eagleson is well known to Irish fight fans having performed excellently at the European Championships just a few months ago. On that occasion, Eagleson was bested by the vastly experienced Frenchman Billal Bennama and had to be content with a silver medal.

There was no such disappointment this afternoon, with the St Pauls Boxing Club member picking up the biggest win of his career. Eagleson's victory was Northern Ireland's second gold medal of the games, with young featherweight Jude Gallagher winning a gold medal after his final Joseph Commey withdrew having been declared medically unfit this morning.
