DWP unveils Universal Credit for Ukraine refugees - but they face a five-week wait for cash

Thousands of Ukrainian refugees are expected to arrive in the UK this week and they will be able to claim benefits.

Figures show that 9,500 family members of people in Britain have been issued visas under the Ukraine Family Scheme - with another 50,000 opening applications. Meanwhile more than 150,000 Brits have signed up to take in a refugee under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which opened visa applications on Friday.

Emergency laws will be laid on Monday to let Ukraine refugees claim benefits and job-finding support immediately when they arrive. They will not have to pass a "habitual residence test" and a wait of up to three months before being able to receive income-related benefits, like others entering the UK.
