DWP issues update on when Tax Credit claimants will receive cost of living payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an important update for those who claim Tax Credits.

Yahoo!News reports that those on means-tested benefits will receive the second instalment of the £650 cost of living payment in a couple of weeks time. But those who claim solely Tax Credits could be kept waiting a little longer.

The means-tested benefit claimants received their first £326 payment in July, whereas Tax Credit claimants were paid between September 2 and 7.

Previously, the DWP have said that Tax Credit claimants would receive their second instalment of £324 in the winter, the same as the other benefit claimants.

However, it has now been confirmed that these claimants will receive the second instalment "shortly after people on the low-income DWP benefits have been paid."

But, it will still be before the end of 2022, as the information indicates that the second payment should be paid sometime after Wednesday, November 23.

The means-tested benefits include:

  • Universal Credit

  • Income Support

  • Pension Credit

  • income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance

The cost of living payment is part of a series of targeted payments intended to help vulnerable people with rising bills and prices. This also includes a £150 disability cost of living payment and a £300 pensioner cost of living payment.

In addition, the government has also capped the average household energy bill at £2,500 a year as part of its Energy Price Guarantee. However, this is not an absolute limit and households may pay more than this depending on how much energy they use.
