Dwight Yorke expects 'a lot more' from Manchester United winger Antony after Liverpool defeat

Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke expects to see 'a lot more' from Antony over the coming months following the winger's inconsistent first season at Old Trafford.

Antony was the marquee signing of Erik ten Hag's first summer in charge at United, the Brazilian brought across from Ajax for around £86million. But after a hugely promising start to the campaign - he scored a wonderful goal in a 3-1 debut win over Arsenal - consistent form has been hard to come by and just two more Premier League goals have followed.

Frustration boiled over on Sunday as United were humbled by Liverpool, six goals in the second half leading to a 7-0 win for Jurgen Klopp's side and utter humiliation for the Reds. While Antony was far from the only one to blame - none of Ten Hag's side were up to standard - the Brazilian's ineffective dribbling once again left a lot to be desired.

"The jury is still out on Antony," Yorke told Premier League Odds. "With the fee that’s been paid for him, you’d expect him to set the Premier League alight. From the clips I’ve seen of him before he joined, he did look impressive but it’s often the same case with foreign leagues, players come to the Premier League and struggle because it’s a different ball game.

"In time we might see the full potential of Antony, but what we expected of him, especially me, I thought he’d be a lot more effective. I’ll give him a pass for now because of where the team is and how we’re performing, but I do expect a lot more from Antony going forward."

A goal off the bench in last month's Europa League win over Barcelona looked like a potential sliding doors moment for Antony, but three starts since have produced neither a goal nor an assist. The Brazilian is one of several players who could be dropped for Thursday's last-16 clash against Real Betis.
