Dustin Johnson responds after US Ryder Cup captain makes LIV Golf admission

Dustin Johnson has had his say on his Ryder Cup eligibility, after Team USA captain Zach Johnson discussed the prospect of picking LIV Golf players at this week's PGA Championship.

It remains to be seen whether those who have joined LIV will be included at this year's Ryder Cup. On the European side, the decision seems to have already been made for captain Luke Donald, after Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia all resigned their DP World Tour membership.

The US skipper faces a headache when it comes to his selection, with three of America's 2021 winning team in Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau now all LIV Golf players.

Captain Johnson looked to play down the LIV discussion when quizzed at Oak Hill this week, as he commented: " We’re at a point right now where it’s not even a discussion item. There’s maybe a couple guys that have come close to securing their spot in the top six, but when it comes to picks it’s not even on my radar.

"Especially given how many points are still out there, whether you’re talking about major championships or elevated events or all of the above. I think it would be premature and almost irresponsible to even go into that. It’s not on my radar right now.”

One man who is hoping LIV players do get the nod, is the captain's namesake Dustin Johnson. The 2020 Masters champion has played an integral role in the Team US camp in recent years, announcing himself as one of the best players of his generation.

He is however none the wiser as to whether he will get the nod in Rome in September, stating: "I mean, I have no idea if I'd get picked. Obviously if I continue to play really well for the rest of the year, then obviously there's a chance. Yes, I would definitely like to play in the Ryder Cup.

"It's one of my favourite events to play in, especially after the last Ryder Cup."

Johnson heads into this week's major in hot form, having secured his second LIV Golf title with victory via a tense play-off in Tulsa last weekend. Discussing his game, the man in form commented: "Yeah, I think I did pretty well there [Oak Hill] in '13.

"Obviously that's a long time ago, but yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Obviously it's a really good golf course. It's going to be tough. I like tough golf courses. It's going to play tough, and from what I hear the rough is really deep. Yeah, looking forward to it. I feel like the game is in really good form going into next week, so we'll see what happens."
