Durham grandmother was planning new life with husband in weeks leading up to death

A Durham grandmother and her husband were planning a new life days before she was found dead.

Sally Turner, 50, died after suffering numerous stab wounds at home in Cuthbert's Avenue, Durham, on June 22 last year.

Her husband, Harry Turner, 54, is currently on trial at Teesside Crown Court charged with her murder - which he denies.

He has admitted manslaughter on grounds of loss of control - which the Crown does not accept.

On day five of the trial, jurors heard a series of text messages between Sally and Turner in the weeks before she died.

Turner told the grandmother they needed a fresh start in "Basildon, Corringham or somewhere close to your family".

Sally replied: "Let's think about it."

But in June, Sally told him: "I want all of us back in Essex asap."

Harry messaged saying they should focus on Essex and she replied saying: "Yes, a new start is what we need."

In other messages read out in court she called him her "sexy husband" and wrote: "I LOVE YOU HARRY TURNER"

Jurors heard the couple had separated and Turner believed his wife was having an affair before deciding to try again.

Sally told a friend: "He said I had a bloke here when he was at a concert and I had sex here while he was at the concert."

Sally said Turner claimed to have purchased cameras from eBay, with one in the sitting room capturing her having sex and one in the bedroom picking up a conversation between her and a man.

The court heard she'd become "paranoid" and when her phone rang she would "jump and shake" before adding: "He does not believe me and says he has a recording. It is doing my head in."

In another series of messages with family and friends, Sally said: "We have decided to try again. We have been talking a lot."

She added: "I'm happy we're trying, happy we still love each other, happy we can look back on this and we got through it."

Jurors were shown CCTV on the day Sally was found dead of the couple walking hand-in-hand towards Coffee at Chesney's in Durham.

The police officer leading the investigation confirmed Turner's wedding ring was found near Sally's body.

The trial, which began on Monday, February 13, has so far heard from witnesses, including a taxi driver Sally was having an affair with at the time of her death, and Royal Mail work colleagues of Turner.

The court has also heard evidence from Dr Louise Mulcahy, a forensic pathologist, who said that Sally’s cause of death was due to multiple stab wounds to her neck and torso.

The trial continues.
