DUP MLA Christopher Stalford's funeral details confirmed

The funeral of DUP South Belfast MLA Christopher Stalford is to be held on Saturday.

Mr Stalford, principal deputy speaker of the Stormont Assembly, died suddenly at home at the weekend aged 39.

He is survived by his wife Laura and their four children.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2pm in Ravenhill Presbyterian Church on Ravenhill Road, moving afterwards to Ballygowan Free Presbyterian Church graveyard.

A family notice read: "Beloved husband of Laura, devoted daddy of Trinity, Oliver, Cameron and Abigail. Dearly loved son of Karen and loving son-in-law to Marion.

"Will be dearly missed by his loving wife, daughters, sons, and his mother, brother, and sisters, also his grandmother and mother-in-law.

"The Lord is my Shepherd, Psalm 23."

The DUP said the church service will be open to all. A service in the family home and the committal after the funeral will be "strictly for family only", the party said.

It added: "Laura and the Stalford family thank everyone for their kind messages and lovely words in recent days.

"They have been so comforting to the family at this incredibly sad time.

"They appreciate the respect for their privacy so far and request that the family continue to be given the space to come to terms with their loss."

Mr Stalford was elected as a DUP MLA for South Belfast in 2016, having previously been a deputy lord mayor, high sheriff and councillor for the city.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Stalford across the political spectrum, with many referencing his wry humour, passion for politics and devotion to his family.

A minute's silence was held in the Assembly chamber on Monday after MLAs held a special sitting fondly reflecting on his life.

DUP deputy leader Paula Bradley led a tearful tribute to Mr Stalford, describing him as a "much-loved friend and esteemed colleague".

"It was a mark of the man that he had friends on all sides of this chamber," she added.

Meanwhile, an anti-Protocol rally in Crossgar, Co Down, planned for Friday has been postponed as a mark of respect following Mr Stalford's sudden death.

The event at an Orange hall in protest against the post-Brexit Irish Sea trade border will instead go ahead a fortnight later on March 11.

It is due to be attended by DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, TUV leader Jim Allister, UUP councillor Jill McCauley, former Brexit party MEP Ben Habib and Baroness Kate Hoey.
