It’s just a few hours until Dundee United are in European action again, and their fans have been in fine voice.
The Tangerines have been flooding into the Netherlands this week ahead of their Europa Conference League third qualifying round second leg clash against AZ Alkmaar. United lead 1-0 from the first leg after new signing Glenn Middleton fired in a stunning strike to give them a narrow lead to protect across the North Sea.
They are 90 minutes away from a spot in the playoff round as it stands. Should they get the job done tonight, then they’ll face the winners of Gil Vicente vs Riga. That one is finely poised at 1-1- after the Portuguese Super Liga side left Latvia with a 1-1 draw last week. A place in the Conference League group stages will then be up for grabs, with the first leg of the next round taking place next Thursday.
There’s work to do tonight first however, and the United fans have been in fine voice in the build up to tonight’s game. However, they’ve been targeted by locals in the city who seemed to take umbrage at some peaceful singing.
Footage has emerged on social media of Tannadice fans walking in the sunshine signing United songs, holding flags and generally supporting their team like normal fans do. But what appears to be a group of young Alkmaar fans waited for them at the end of a street before becoming involved in a scuffle.
The footage shows United fans slowing down and the singing fall to a murmur as a couple of individuals step off the pavement and on to the road, seemingly to instigate a confrontation.
The camera then dips as shouts from fellow fans are heard, who appear to be trying to calm the situation after what looked like a completely unprovoked attack. The hope is that no further incidents occur in Alkmaar as the travelling United support gear up to roar on Jack Ross ' side in the AFAS Stadium this evening.
