Dundee DJ playing BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend 'almost fell over' after getting the news

Dundee DJ Hannah Laing says she intends to "make a statement" when she takes to the stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend later this spring.

The local spin doctor, who has been DJing for nine years, has been announced as one of the acts playing the BBC Music Introducing stage on the first day of this year's Big Weekend in Coventry.

She was hand-picked by Radio 1 Dance host Jaguar Bingham to play the stage, who plucked her out from scores of potential acts who submit their tunes to the Music Introducing platform hoping to get noticed.

BBC Music Introducing has helped to launch the careers of huge acts like George Ezra, Florence and the Machine and Jake Bugg.

And Hannah is sharing a Friday festival line-up with hitmakers such as Disclosure and Ibiza legend Pete Tong - along with a wider roster of acts boasting the likes of Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran and Lorde.

Speaking to Dundee Live, Hannah said she "just about fell over" when she was told to pack her bags - giving a whole new meaning to being 'sent to Coventry'.

She said: "This is like every artist's dream, to be put on a line-up like this.

"I've been getting a lot of support on BBC Introducing and Jaguar and the rest of Radio 1 have been really supportive.

"I just about fell over when I got the email. I've had some really cool shows in the past but with something like Big Weekend you get so much exposure and it's just insane and special."

The Big Weekend shout is a big step for Hannah, who hopes the festival will serve as a stepping stone to going full time with her music career after Covid put a two-year hold on future plans.

As well as DJing at venues across Scotland and playing sets in Ibiza, Miami and New York, she also organises her own events and club nights under the moniker of Hannah's Choice.

"I thought everything was over for me for a bit, because things were really taking off for me pre-Covid," she added.

"I didn't know how I was going to recover from it - I was doing live streams and trying to stay relevant, which is hard when you're not doing gigs.

"But as soon as the clubs opened again I did an event in Dundee that was sold out and it was one of the best parties I've put on.

"It was one of the first days clubs were open again and everyone was absolutely buzzing from start to finish."

As for the Big Weekend, running from May 27 to 29, Hannah is already thinking about her set.

The Coventry event is the first Radio 1 event since the pandemic hit. Dundee was tragically robbed of its bid to host the 2020 Big Weekend at Camperdown Park because of Covid.

Meanwhile, 2021's event was a virtual one hosted on BBC iPlayer and the broadcaster's Sounds music app.

Hannah summed up: "I really want to make a statement. Nine years is a long time to be doing this and it feels good to know that I've worked hard for this and it's paying off."
