Dundalk have signed Robbie McCourt from Sligo Rovers in a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.
And Lilywhites boss Stephen O’Donnell says the transfer has signalled the end of attempts to get Mark Connolly back to the club.
Linked with Derry City, centre-back Connolly was a big hit at Oriel Park during the first-half of the season.
But Dundee United recalled him from his loan this month, despite not appearing to have any future at the club.
O’Donnell said today: “Mark was brilliant for us and we were great for Mark.
“It was a six-month loan but it felt like a lot longer than that because he really immersed himself in the group.
“It’s unfortunate that all parties couldn’t come to an agreement but that’s football. We move on in our direction and Mark will move on in his direction.”
New arrival McCourt, 24, spent the last 18 months with Sligo Rovers and the Dubliner can play in defence and midfield.
“As soon as Stevie gave me the call I wanted to jump into the car and come up straight away,” he said.
“I think he tried to get me twice before so hopefully this is the third time lucky!
“He’s made it known that he likes me as a player and all you want to hear as a footballer is that you’re going to get a chance under the manager.”
A former West Brom youth, McCourt played with Bohs and Waterford before joining the Bit O’Red.
Dundalk boss O’Donnell said: “He’s a player I should have got after his spell at Waterford.
“When I saw him go to Sligo and develop again I was thinking, ‘why didn’t I make a move for him’ because he impressed in both spells.
