Duncan Ferguson in Rangers throwback as he claims prison food can't compare to Forest Green Rovers vegan grub

Duncan Ferguson says the grub at trendy Forest Green Rovers is miles above what he experienced during his stretch in Barlinnie.

The former Scotland forward has landed his first manager's gig at the struggling English League One club after a lengthy coaching stint at Everton. He played for Dundee United and Rangers north of the border, spending six weeks in prison after being found guilty of assault following a headbutt on Raith Rovers defender John McStay while playing at Ibrox in 1994.

One of the game's colourful characters, he joins a club which is thought to be the world's first carbon-neutral outfit, where players eat vegan food and solar panels power the stadium. And when unveiled alongside some vegan burgers, it caught the imagination of many, and Ferguson said to The Athletic of the food offerings in reference to being arrested at Rangers: "The food here is really good. Remember, I have been in Barlinnie.

“Look, I was a country boy growing up. I’ve always loved nature, I’ve kept pigeons, greyhounds, rabbits, ferrets, that’s me.

"And the world is changing. It’s warming up and if we don’t do something, there’ll be no snow, honestly.

"No icebergs left, no polar bears, no pandas. They’re chopping down the Amazon rainforest and it’s shocking, it’s getting warmer, you can see it in front of you.

“I didn’t know a lot about the vegan stuff until I came here, but I know about global warming and it’s incredible what the owner has done here. And maybe hiring me has put a bit more focus on the club.

"I want us to play on the front foot and be hard to beat, exciting, aggressive; stop conceding goals. We need to show real commitment and a never-say-die attitude."
