Dun Laoghaire's Ukulele Hooley returns this weekend

The Ukulele Hooley returns to Dun Laoghaire this weekend to the delight of locals and music lovers from around the city.

Taking place from Friday, August 26 until Sunday, August 28, the Ukulele Hooley is now in its 11th year, returning after a Covid-enforced two year absence.

The event is the largest Ukulele festival in Europe. With free entry to most events taking place as part of the musical celebration, the Ukulele Hooley is designed to entertain all ages.

Part of the festival sees a rather big performance take place in the People's Park in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday, along with a string of other things happening in the area such as workshops, The Bus Busk and open mic events.

Organiser Niall Carty said of the Dun Laoghaire Ukulele Hooley: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring the Hooley back.

"The Hooley was really missed by players in Ireland and abroad and by fans who came every year.

"This is a free, family focussed, fun event that has grown into an internationally recognised celebration of the humble ukulele which is now one of the most popular instruments in Ireland. The Hooley has been missed but we are back in full swing."

For the kids, there will be a beginner's workshop led by Sheilagh Fox of RUG at 1.30pm on Saturday, August 27.

The Bus Busk, which also takes place on Saturday, sees ticket holders being brought on a journey through south County Dublin while singing songs from the Hooley song books.

The Ukulele Hooley sees performers from Ireland, the US, UK, Belgium and elsewhere provide stellar entertainment for those heading along.

Amongst the top performers on the bill for Ukulele Hooley 2022 are Christopher Davis Shannon, The Ukulele Uff Trio and The Dublin Ukulele Collective.
