Saints travelled to Glasgow to meet bottom-of-the-league side Whitecraigs on Saturday, hoping to boost their promotion hopes with a bonus-point win.
Team hopes were superbly met as they continued recent form and overwhelmed the struggling Glasgow squad with seven unanswered tries to romp to a 41-0 win.
It was another great result for Saints – and particularly so for 18-year-old back, Euan Muirhead, who was making his 1st XV debut and made a spectacular impact by running in three of the Dumfries’ tries.
The Dumfries pack thoroughly dominated play from the kick-off with powerful scrummaging which produced opportunities for the backs to open up play. Their handling and strong running eventually paid off with three first-half tries from Andrew Whiteford, Robert Douglas and Euan Muirhead. Jack Steele added two conversions to give Saints a well-deserved 19-0 lead at the interval.
Whitecraigs had a short period of possession early after the break, taking them close to the Dumfries line but solid Saints defence held them out to keep the home side’s scoreline blank. Thereafter, Saints began to take control again.
The Whitecraigs defence was good, particularly at rucks where they turned over possession several time but the sustained pressure from Saints took its toll and they added four more tries from Ian Carlisle, Robert Douglas (his second of the match) and two more from Euan Muirhead to complete his memorable hat-trick. Jack Steele added one more conversion to give Saints an unanswered total score of 41 points.
The 1st XV are back at Park Farm tomorrow (Saturday) for a home game against Peebles.
