Dumfries model plane enthusiasts involved in world record bid

Model plane enthusiasts from Dumfries have taken part in a world record attempt.

To celebrate the centenary of the British Model Flying Association, clubs across the UK were asked to take part in a bid to set a new marker for the number of model aircraft flying simultaneously.

Dumfries Model Flying Club was one of the clubs taking part in Sunday’s effort, the initial forecast for strong winds and thunderstorms thankfully proving wrong.

Six members took part and completed the challenge and they are now playing a waiting game to see if a new benchmark was set.

The club’s Richard Whiting said: “There were almost 300 model flying clubs participating nationwide and clubs had five days to submit their verification documents and photographs.

“ It will then take several days for BMFA head office to validate and compile all the documentation.

“It’s my understanding that when all the data is validated and compiled, BMFA must first submit the claim to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale for formal ratification and they will then issue a formal certificate of authentication which will then be submitted to Guinness World Records.

“BMFA has reported a huge turnout and it seems that the final tally of models in the air will run into thousands.”

As part of the BMFA centenary celebrations, Dumfries Model Flying Club is offering a free trial flight to anyone who would like to have a go at flying a radio controlled model aircraft.

Free trial flights must be booked, which can be done at www.dmfc.org.uk.
