Dumfries and Galloway to host British Gold Panning Association Championships

The Museum of Lead Mining at Wanlockhead is to host the British Gold Panning Association Championships at the end of the month.

Some of the top names in the field will be there from May 27 to 28, with the Scottish Championships held on the Saturday and British one the following day.

However, organisers are also keen to encourage more people into gold panning as spectators or to have a go with no experience necessary and all age groups welcome.

The competitions – which include enthusiasts and newcomers – start at 10am and include: open (mixed men and women), veterans, tri-pan, three person team, challenge, children’s, juniors and beginners.

At previous events newcomers could take part in the open category but a beginners competition has now been introduced.

BGA president, James Linnett, said: “It allows anyone who has not tried competition panning before to take part against other beginners and not have the added pressure of being stood next to a pro.”

Promising a warm welcome and a chance to watch or compete in “one of the most unique hobbies available,” he added: “New panners are always welcome, so don’t worry if you have never tried gold panning or competition panning, as there will always be people there to help you out and show you the techniques.

“If you don’t have the required pans, then don’t worry, as we can help you out and lend you one for your heat.”

Tickets are available on the door from 9am each day and registration for the competitions will be take place inside the coffee shop from 9.15am with cash only payments for the heats.

The costs are £6 to BGA members (£8, non) for each of the open, veterans or tri-pan competitions; three person team is £9 (£3 each); juniors 9-16, £5; Challenge, £7.50 (cash prize for winner and runner up); beginners, £5; and free to children under 9.

The museum will be open from 9am on both days and a raffle will be held over the weekend, with various prices up for the taking. All prizes have been kindly donated by individuals for the BGA.

Camping and parking for caravans is available up in the top car park at the bowling green.
