Curlers from the region achieved a three-peat in the Perth Masters at the weekend.
Kirkgunzeon’s Grant Hardie, and Stranraer duo of Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan, were a part of Bruce Mouat’s team which got 2023 off to a flyer.
The Olympic silver medalists beat Italy’s Team Joel Retornaz 5-4 in Saturday’s final as they now head to Canada for the Grand Slam of Curling in Alberta.
Saturday’s encounter was a rematch of last month’s Masters final which the Italians won for their first ever Grand Slam victory. It was also a rematch of November’s European championship semi final.
Team Mouat won the rematch in dramatic fashion, putting up a three-spot with an angle tap in the eighth and final end to grab the narrow one-point victory.
The Scottish side were a perfect 8-0 at the event and are 32-12 for the season which comes after November’s European Curling Championship victory.
On Facebook the team said: “We always love this event, and we’re thrilled to have kicked off 2023 with a win. A great close battle with Team Retornaz.
“Appreciate all the support from our fans, family, friends, British Curling and sponsors. Thank you. See you next week at the Grand Slam of Curling.”
Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling kicks off the new year with the Co-op Canadian Open in Camrose, Alberta featuring 16 teams playing a triple knockout format for a $100,000 purse.
Dumfries’ Ross Whyte is also fielding a team in the event which includes Stranraer’s Euan Kyle as lead.
