Dumfries and Galloway Council blasted for erecting flood warning sign in the wrong place

A Dumfries woman has blasted the council after a flood warning sign was erected in the wrong place outside her house.

Elizabeth Johnstone of Meadowpark questioned the placement of the sign, heading towards Kirkton, when it was put up last week and suggested it should be nearer the A701 where it would be more visible.

A council official informed Mrs Johnstone the sign was in the wrong place and should be moved roughly 20 feet further along her garden wall.

She said: “The whole thing has been a complete shambles.

“When they actually erected it I couldn’t believe it. I told them: ‘There’s no way that thing is staying there’.”

Mrs Johnstone also questioned why the sign was put there in the first place.

She said: “I’ve been here for seven years and I can’t think of a single time where the road up to Kirkton has been closed because of flooding.

“I’d be interested to know the full cost of this because I believe the signs cost over £10,000.

“The council probably didn’t have to notify me but I thought it would have been courteous. I tried to phone the roads department when it was built but I couldn’t get through.

“I phoned the council switchboard and spoke to a nice gentleman who said he would email somebody.

“Someone did come back and he said to me that it’s been put in the wrong place. You can imagine my reaction.

“How did it get to that stage?”

The council was approached for comment.
