Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum to reopen for 2023 season

A popular Dumfries attraction is getting ready for take-off in the 2023 season.

The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum will reopen on Saturday and Sunday after being closed for the winter.

The site is home to an extensive collection of aircraft including the Loch Doon Spitfire which was lost in a training accident in East Ayrshire in October 1941.

The museum also boasts an exhibition of the history of the airborne forces, engines, the history of the RAF in Dumfries and a refurbished display on the home front which tells the story of those who stayed at home during the war.

Last year only the ground floor of the control room tower was open but new windows have been fitted to the listed building which means more of the tower will be re-opening throughout the year as team members reinstate displays inside.

Charlie Ewing, a director and volunteer at the museum said: “We’re desperate to get people back on site.

“It’s always good to get a bit of peace when we close down for the winter and get through our winter work programme which allows us to get on with the major refurbishment but it’s always great at the end of that to get people back on site and remind us why we do it and share the collection with people.”

On Sunday Dumfries and Galloway Vintage Machinery Club will hold the 8th Wullie Broon Memorial Stationary Engine Crank-up at the site.

The museum will run a number of events throughout the year. On May 13 and 14 the Cockpits North and Model Show Weekend will take place followed by Home Front Day on June 10, Military Vehicle Weekend on July 22 and 23, Airborne Forces Day on August 26 and Wings and Wheels on September 24.

After the weekend the museum will open on Wednesday. Thursday and Saturday from 10am until 5pm with final entry at 4pm.
