Duffy makes rare return to social media to support Ukraine amid Russian invasion

Welsh singer Duffy, who rose to national fame in the late noughties, has made a rare return to social media to show her support to the people of Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

Sharing a series of photos and excerpts of text on her Instagram stories, Duffy paid an emotional tribute to the people of Ukraine as they continue to go through a trying time.

As well as showing her support, she made a plea to fans and asked them to donate money.

Writing: "Acts Of Kindness" she shared a video clip and penned: "Thousands of Berlin residents showed up at the central train station, with sign boards, offering displaced Ukrainians place to stay."

The next slide read: "Polish families leave empty prams at the train station, for Ukrainian mums to use escaping the war with their babies."

The third simply said: "Support ARTYOM," with the fourth slide being bank details.

Two days prior to Duffy taking to her stories, she posted on her main grid, writing alongside a video: "A miracle called kindness.

"Since the war broke out - Artyom @artprykhodko delivers and donates food to the elderly, vulnerable and disabled people of Kharkiv, helping those who cannot evacuate.

"Artyom is a volunteer, who took up aiding people himself. The streets are so unsafe but he does it anyway, continuing to volunteer in danger. Kharkiv is currently one of most shelled cities of Ukraine."

She added: "Separate to putting himself in danger, seeing tragedy on the streets everywhere, driving vehicles, shopping, standing in the freezing temperatures, organising and taking orders - he delivers to isolated individuals up in high-rise apartments."

Before asking her fans: Would you join me and donate to his efforts?

"Your money will go to buy vital, critical and essential goods, for those who need it so so desperately. Your support will also give Artyom the means to keep going, in an unbelievably challenging time.

"Details and instructions of how to donate in ‘stories’ above. All national and international banks are wavering their fees to send money to Ukraine at this time, to assist global relief.

"I appreciate sending money overseas can be daunting, but it’s simple and easy, if combined with a little bit of patience to do so."

She signed off with: "Lots of love to you all on these sad, but hopeful, days. Duffy."

Last autumn the Mercy singer flooded her Instagram account with her "passing thoughts" and touched on themes of love, history, acceptance, music and life in a series of text uploads.

She captioned one with an explanation for her flurry of social media activity by penning: "Sharing passing thoughts. I don’t envisage this being a permanent thing, something to connect. Nervous. Doing it anyway. Duffy."

In February 2020, Duffy appeared on Instagram after being absent from the spotlight.

She revealed she had been out of the public eye following a horrifying ordeal, that she opened up about.

In a longer statement regarding her rape ordeal, Duffy explained on her website in April 2020 that she had been drugged at a restaurant on her birthday and then held captive in a hotel room in a foreign country.

She recalled: "It was my birthday, I was drugged at a restaurant, I was drugged then for four weeks and travelled to a foreign country.

"I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a travelling vehicle. I was put into a hotel room and the perpetrator returned and raped me.

"I remember the pain and trying to stay conscious in the room after it happened. I was stuck with him for another day, he didn’t look at me, I was to walk behind him, I was somewhat conscious and withdrawn. I could have been disposed of by him."
