Dubliners share their favourite Irish songs with one popular singer reigning supreme

As tens of thousands of people across the world celebrate St Patrick's Day we asked Dubliners what their favourite Irish songs were.

We received a variety of answers one but one famous Dublin musician reigned supreme and it was none other than Sheriff Street's very own Luke Kelly.

One woman told Dublin Live her favourite song was "The Town I Loved So Well" by Luke Kelly and the Dubliners.

When asked why she choose that song she said: "Because my mother came from Sheriff Street and so did he."

Another proud Dubliner said her most liked song was Luke Kelly's "Scorn Not His Simplicity".

She added: "[I like it] as it is a famous Dublin song. It’s beautiful. It’s about a child with Down’s Syndrome. It’s really touching."

One man we ran into said he liked listening to Dirty Old Town by another Dublin legend Phil Lynott.

He said: "It reminds me of some pleasant memories. I always fancied him as a singer and I danced to him at the Go Go on Abbey Street back in the late 60s."

Another Luke Kelly fan we spoke to said his favourite Irish ballad was Raglan Roads.

"The first song that comes to mind is Raglan Roads. It was written by Paddy Kavanagh.

"He was a Monaghan man but it’s a song about Dublin, about heartache. It’s a sad song. It’s a touching song. I love it."
