Dubliner Edward Byrne loses to unbeaten rival in Countdown final - but says his time on the Channel 4 show was "unforgettable"

Countdown whizz Edward Byrne has said his time on the Channel 4 was “unforgettable” - as he bowed out of the final today in second place in a closely contested game.

Edward, 27, from Booterstown in Dublin went head to head with his unbeaten rival Tom Stevenson and ended the game with a score of 91 to Tom’s 106.

Tom was then crowned champion and presented with the Richard Whiteley Memorial Cup.

Edward, 27, sailed through his semi-final game which was broadcast yesterday on Channel 4 with his undeniable knack for solving number puzzles, finding nine letter words and cracking conundrums on the Channel 4 game show.

The Civil Servant qualified for the finals of series 86 on the show as Number 2 seed after becoming an Octochamp in July with 969 points.

Tom Stevenson qualified as Number 1 seed with 1,000 points.

Today, both went head to head in the final where Edward was trailing but made a huge comeback after finding a nine letter word with three rounds left.

Edward, who watched the recorded show in Farmer Brown’s pub on Clonskeagh Road in Rathmines told us: “I am really proud having watched the show back. Tom is a worthy winner and it was unforgettable.

“Tom is top class and a really nice guy. I had a blast overall on the show and it was nice to get a good game.”

Host Colin Murray said on the show that both players “topped off a remarkable series.”

As for what is next on the cards for Edward, we may see him appear on Irish television screens in the near future as he has already registered for a new mystery quiz show on RTE.

He will also appear next year on the Championship of Champions of Countdown along with top finalists from the last three to four years.

The new mystery RTE quiz show, which is being cast by Green Inc, is being touted as the ideal opportunity for someone "always playing along with tough TV quiz shows".

It's expected that the show will film in early 2023 and will be hosted by Darragh Ennis, best known as The Menace on The Chase.

“I have registered my interest in this new quiz as I am eager to take part in an Irish quiz show,” Edward said.

But for now, he will sit back and relive his magical moments on Countdown.
