Dublin woman who overcame neurological difficulties launches book with proceeds going to important cause

A Dublin woman who overcame her own neurological difficulties is launching a book with all the proceeds going to an important cause.

Author Alison McNamara, who lives in Wicklow, overcame her medical issues by developing a rehabilitation programme with her horse.

She even plans to donate all of the funds from the sale of the book to the National Meals on Wheels Network.

The book titled “Thea’s Challenge New Beginnings” tells the story of generations coming together through the wonder of nature.

A chance encounter leads to a retired headmistress introducing four young adventurers to the wonderful world of horse therapy. It is about collaboration making all things possible.

Alison is passionate about how “Thea's Challenge” can benefit both young and old and shares the vision that the National Meals on Wheels Network has on the delivery of food not just to elderly people but also to the vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Alison, who hails from Killiney, said: “’In order to highlight the importance of older people in our society and to encourage our younger people to mix more with our national treasures, I built the story of Thea’s Challenge around the two generations coming together’.”

The National Meals on Wheels Network is dedicated to meeting the nutritional and social needs of older and vulnerable people to enable them to live independently.

Tracey Noone, the National Meals on Wheels Network Development Officer with Irish Rural Link also said: “We are delighted to be associated with the book.

“The importance of the Meals on Wheels service in Ireland cannot be underestimated.

“The recent Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for what we believe to have always been an essential front line community service.

“The stigma that may have been traditionally associated with Meals on Wheels has to a certain extent been alleviated by the pandemic.

“By being associated with a book that encourages the collaboration of young and old through the story of horse therapy for the benefit of the Meals on Wheels Network will hopefully go towards embedding the benefits of the service in every community in Ireland.”

Thea’s Challenge New Beginnings by Alison McNamara will be launched by An Cathaoirleach, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr. Lettie McCarthy on Friday 27 May, 2022 at 11am in Kingstown Suite, Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
