Dublin weather: Wet Easter in store with heavy rain to batter the country

There won't be much barbecuing this weekend with heavy rain set to batter the country this Easter.

Met Eireann say we can expect a miserable weekend with strong showers set to dominate the long weekend, particularly on Easter Sunday night into Monday morning. And the week leading up to the Easter celebrations won't be much better with more heavy rain following the wettest March on record in Ireland.

Early morning rain and drizzle will mostly fizzle out today with the forecaster saying we can expect a mostly dry day with highest temperatures of 11 to 13C. But rain will develop again tonight and remain persistent throughout the evening.

Tomorrow morning will be wet in most areas although it will clear eastwards in the afternoon with sunny spells and a few showers and highs again of 11 to 13C. Here's the outlook for the rest of the week according to the national forecast.

Thursday: "A bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers, these mainly over the northern half of the country, where a few may be heavy. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light to moderate west to northwest breezes. Thursday night will be cold and dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog and light breezes. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees with frost in many areas."

Friday: "Dry with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with light to moderate south to southeast winds, freshening in the evening and night."

Saturday: "Mainly dry with sunny spells. However, rain and drizzle will develop in the west towards evening and spread eastwards through the late evening and night. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh southeast winds."

Sunday: "Mostly cloudy in eastern areas with some light rain or drizzle. It will be brighter further west. However, through the evening, persistent rain will spread from the west. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with mostly light breezes. On Easter Sunday night, rain will spread to all areas and will be heavy at times."

Monday: "Wet with rain in all areas. The rain will gradually clear with sunny spells and scattered showers following."
