Dublin psychologist teaching high heel dancing that ‘helps without therapy’

A Dublin psychologist is teaching high heel dancing that “helps people without getting a therapist”.

Angela Didek is a dance teacher who has a business called Dance It Out for children in Dublin City. She studied dance and psychology at university to go down the route of dance therapy or becoming a psychologist.

The dance instructor understands how to use dance not only as an art and a means of exercise, but as a tool to in still confidence and wellbeing in those in her classes. She told Dublin Live: “I feel that getting a dance class gets you breathing so it’s actually helping people without getting a therapist or talking to friends because you’re actually forced to be present, move and breathe.

“The most important thing they would learn in my class is the importance of empowering one another. I always set the tone at the start of my class saying the intention is to be there for each other.

“In society we’ve so many different pressures, we’ve all these thoughts going through our head. As women, we understand each other and that we’ve so much against us. But when we’re in this room, it doesn’t matter if you fall flat on your face or don’t get one move right, you’re here, you’re worthy and you’re supported.”

Angela found that many women want to go out to pubs and nightclubs to dance. But there can be a lot of negative energy that comes along with it.

She added: “A lot of women want to go out to the pubs just to dance and what we’re doing is essentially a night out without the alcohol and without any unwanted attention. It’s providing that space and I think people are gravitating towards that because they want to do different things.

“The people who end up staying with me aren't just the people who want to progress and wear heels, but more of the connections they create in class and the confidence that they get from it.”
