Dublin City Council have announced that the public can enjoy free bikes to mark World Car Free Day tomorrow.
The initiative is being rolled out in conjunction with NOW dublinbikes, an app that provides bike hire across the city. NOW is offering cyclists free 30 minute cycles on Thursday, which can be accessed through their app using code NOWDBS.
The offer is available to both new and pre-existing customers who download the app. The offer is available for journeys under 30 minutes all day Thursday. The typical cost of a one day ticket with NOW dublinbikes stands at €3.50, which gives people unlimited access to 30 minute bike rides over the course of the day. A charge is applied for cycles that exceed this amount.

Dublin City Council encouraged city cyclists to avail of the offer in order to cut down on emissions for the day. The event coincides with Sustainable Development Goals week, which aims to protect the planet through localised action plans.
Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan stated: “ I am delighted to announce the launch of this new annual week of action for the Sustainable Development Goals and I encourage everyone to get involved – to know more about them and to understand how our actions now can shape our future. We all have a stake in how our world develops.”
Some people criticised Dublin’s response to World Car Free Day, arguing that measures to restrict traffic within the city would have been more impactful than merely introducing free bikes. Brussels, for example, holds an annual car-free day each September by prohibiting cars in the city, typically on a Sunday. The restriction is put in place during daylight hours to encourage the use of public transport and bikes.
There are currently 1,600 NOW dublinbikes available through the app. The bikes are typically unlocked at docking stations throughout the city. There have been an estimated 40,000 journeys made on the one-day ticket option since its introduction.
