Dublin Airport was Ireland's biggest polluter in 2021

Dublin Airport was Ireland's biggest polluter in 2021 according to data revealed at the COP27.

Last year the country's largest transport hub was responsible for just over one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. It was not the only Dublin location that was among Ireland's biggest contributors polluters.

Other locations included Drogheda Cement Plant in second place, Ballyconnell Cement Plant in Co Cavan third and Dublin's road network coming in at fourth. Traffic in Dublin accounted for 773,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions last year.

Despite the place at top spot the daa which runs Dublin Airport said it is committed to helping Ireland with its reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions. The current plan is to reduce the usage by 51% by 2030.

A spokesman said: "Additionally we are working towards a commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions from our operations by 2050, or sooner. As a vital economic enabler, daa has a clear sustainability strategy already in place to deliver key initiatives at Dublin Airport in terms of embracing new technologies, ensuring efficient aircraft operations and implementing smart environmental measures to play our part to reduce carbon emissions."
