Dublin Airport to get anti-drone technology after flights diverted six times

Drones will not be targeted by nets or projectiles as Cabinet approved new measures to prevent disruptions at Dublin Airport.

The Government signed off of new measures on Tuesday following six drone interruptions at Dublin Airport over the last six weeks.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Jack Chambers received Government approval to instruct the daa to examine “non-kinetic counter-drone technologies” that are available for purchase.

They have been instructed to select the most appropriate system for immediate to short-term usage pending a deeper analysis of medium to longer-term solutions. The daa will be given permission to operate the technology in the immediate to short-term as an emergency measure.

The cost of purchasing, deploying and operating thIS system at Dublin airport will be met by DAA.

The Government decided to use “non-kinetic” technology that scrambles or interrupts a drone’s radio frequency. These systems cause a drone to return to its operator or to land a “designated safe site”.

Kinetic systems use technology that physically capture, damage or destroy a drone using nets, projectiles or other drones.

However, the Cabinet heard that these systems carry risks and can be ineffective against drones moving quickly and in unpredictable patterns.

They may also present more complex legal issues around use of force and causing damage to property.

The Ministers also got agreement that consideration should be given to an appropriate existing state agency that would be tasked to select and operate both drone detection and counter-drone technological solutions in the medium to longer-term. This takes into account the need to protect other airports, other critical national infrastructure and other buildings. Agreement on this State agency would be taken no later than July 1.
