Drying hack to avoid 'smelly clothes' after washing

A cleaning guru has shared a top hack to stop washing smelling of damp this winter.

As the winter nights draw in and the weather inevitably turns colder, many people will be looking for quick and easy ways to dry their washing that saves both time and money. With soaring energy costs amid the cost of living crisis, many households across the UK will want to avoid using the dryer, or even the heating.

But one TikTok user has a very practical solution that is within the budget, the Mirror reports. Ann Russell regularly replies to cries for help, sharing top tips to her two million TikTok followers.

This time, the social media user was asked how to stop clothes from smelling after washing, when they are struggling to dry. In the short clip, she shows how she neatly folds her washing onto a clothes rack to dry out, and has a fan pointing up at the washing to air it out.

While hanging the clothes, she made sure there was not too much on it and that everything was spaced out. She said: "I try and make sure that everything is folded and not too thick. Now this is a towel, it was wet last night, it’s still a little bit damp where it is hitting this, which is a thick wool jumper.

The TikTok user placed a small fan under the clothes horse (TikTok/Ann Russell)

"Now what you are going to have to do is rewash your stuff if the smell doesn’t come out put it all in the thing, rewash some of it, halve the amount, rewash and have a sniff. If it doesn’t smell good, wash again, high spin, and then just don’t dry too much stuff at a time.

"Literally like this. Everything is folded neatly and the reason is when the fan goes up, the air goes through, it needs to be able to move, evaporate the water off. It it’s too thick or clumpy it won’t get rid of the water and then it will smell."

Raking in over 250,000 views, hundreds of people were quick to comment on the useful tip, with some even offering their own advice. One user said: "What I find helps is turning them over after a few hours so the air can circulate to areas it may not reach."

Another added: "Putting stuff on hangers seems to help and spacing them out hanging them on door frames."
