Prosecuting, Tracy Wright told Paisley Sheriff Court that at the time of the incident which occurred in the Accident and Emergency ward in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the corridor was “extremely busy” with “numerous patients and paramedics.”

Ms Wright explained: “Around 8.40pm on June 16, Mr O’Hara was on duty in his capacity as ambulance crew.

“He was actioned to attend the Nationwide bank in Paisley as the accused had fallen into a bus lane causing minor injuries to his face.

“While being transported to hospital, the accused became aggressive to ambulance staff and while within the hospital began to shout at the public telling them to, ’F**k off’ and ‘get to f**k.’

“The accused stated to O’Hara, ‘Do you want a square go?’ before throwing a punch at him but no contact was made.

“Police were in attendance at the hospital for another matter and the accused then tried to headbutt O’Hara.

“McGregor was arrested and began shouting at police officers, ‘Take these cuffs off and you’ll see what happens,’ and ‘Moan out to this car park and I’ll end you.’

“The accused also stated, ‘You’re for it, you f*****g prick.

“He was taken to Greenock police station and due to his level of aggression wasn’t cautioned and charged.”

Charlie McCusker, defence solicitor, told the court McGregor “fully realises his behaviour will cause the court concern.”

Mr McCusker added: “He recognises that where this incident took place will also cause you some concern.

“He has always been on the straight and narrow.

“He has expressed his remorse and he told me he didn’t think he was capable of this behaviour – it’s funny what drink can do to some people.

“But since then he has taken the decision to address his habits.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill said: “What does concern me is this took place in the Accident and Emergency department and the complainer is a paramedic and you attempt to punch and headbutt him.

“This must have been frightening for this gentleman when he was just going about his job.”

Sheriff Gill ordered McGregor to carry out 130 hours of unpaid work in the community within 12 months.
