A drunk driver fled the scene of an accident he caused which saw the main road into a Kinross-shire village blocked then gave police a false name when they caught up with him.
Brian Richardson attempted to overtake an HGV in a Renault on Main Street in Blairingone while a van was approaching him in the opposite direction but misjudged the manoeuvre and hit both vehicles.
He got out of his car then ran off but was later traced by police after witnesses provided a description of the 34-year-old, Perth Sheriff Court heard last week.
“The accused moved into the opposite lane and began to overtake heading straight towards the van,” fiscal depute Bill Kermode told the court.
“The accused attempted to weave between [the vehicles] but there was insufficient room.”
Mr Kermode said Richardson’s car “ricocheted” across the road after striking both vehicles and hit another parked car but he then attempted to turn around and drive back in the direction he had came.
“The accused turned his vehicle and attempted to drive back the way he came but was unable to because the road was blocked,” he said.
“The accused’s car was dragging his rear bumper behind him.”
Mr Kermode said Richardson, who appeared in court via a video link from HMP Perth, then got out of his car and was overheard “rambling” by witnesses.
The court heard he then ran off to evade police but was traced a short time later walking along the A977 between Blairingone and Powmill with a bleeding forehead.
Mr Kermode added when Richardson was asked his name he told police his first name was Gareth.
“The accused then provided a positive roadside breath test and was arrested,” Mr Kermode concluded.
Richardson, of Navitie Park, Ballingry, admitted driving dangerously by attempting to overtake a lorry when it was unsafe to do so on January 20 this year, driving towards an oncoming van and causing a collision.
He also admitted driving while nearly three times the legal drink drive limit, driving with no insurance and attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving police a false name.
Sheriff Morag Fraser jailed Richardson for 80 days, backdated to January 23 this year, when he was first remanded in custody for his offending.
She also disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 20 months.
