Neighbours in south Manchester were woken up by a high-speed police chase in the early hours of this morning. Residents in Chorlton and Whalley Range reported seeing a police helicopter and cop cars around 3.30am.
It comes as officers were tracking down a car in the area which had failed to stop for police after being seen driven with no lights on, with a police helicopter above assisting with the pursuit. The Manchester Evening News understands that as the car was being chased by officers, objects which were believed to be drugs were seen being thrown out of the vehicle.
Greater Manchester Police says the occupants got out of the car, but were eventually found by officers. After drugs were found close nearby, all three were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.
The commotion disturbed many residents across the Chorlton and Whalley Range area, with eyewitnesses reporting a loud noise coming from at least one helicopter above. One resident, who contacted the M.E.N. in the early hours of the morning, said: "Any idea what’s happening in Chorlton?
"I woke up with two very fast car chases down Oswald Road and now two massive helicopters flying around and it’s only 3.30am." Another resident contacted GMP on Twitter to ask what was going on.
They wrote: "I presume that it’s your helicopter that’s been flying around Whalley Range for an hour. It woke me up and sounded like a helicopter chasing a small prop plane."
A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 3.20am on Sunday (June 26, 2022) officers on patrol in the Chorlton area of Manchester engaged in a short pursuit after sighting a vehicle with no lights which subsequently failed to stop. During the pursuit, the occupants of the vehicle alighted.
"A short time later, three males were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply. A quantity of suspected drugs were recovered nearby."
