Around half of England and the whole of Wales are officially in drought as provisional Met Office figures reveal both experienced the driest July on record this year.
England recorded just 6.5mm of rain across July, or 10 per cent of the long-term average for the month, less than half of the previous record of 13.4mm set in 1911.
