Initially, the SDF accused 'Syrian regime-backed mercenaries' of conducting Sunday's attack, but their second statement clarified that they now attribute it to 'Iran-backed militias' after a thorough investigation. This umbrella group has been responsible for numerous drone attacks on U.S. military bases and personnel in both Iraq and Syria. They have consistently called for the withdrawal of American soldiers from these countries.
The timing of this attack is significant, as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has created a volatile atmosphere in the region. The war originated from Hamas' violent actions in southern Israel on October 7.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based opposition war monitor, reported that at least seven SDF fighters were killed in Sunday's attack, with at least 18 others sustaining various injuries, some critical. The attack occurred just two days after the U.S. military launched strikes against militant targets with links to Iran in Syria and Iraq.
In response to the attack, the SDF stated that they have the right to retaliate. Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command issued a statement explaining that their strikes on Sunday targeted four anti-ship missiles that were being prepared for launch from Houthi rebel-controlled areas in Yemen. The U.S. military justified these strikes as an act of self-defense, given that the missiles posed an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region.
These strikes came one day after the U.S. and Britain conducted a second wave of attacks against the Houthis in an effort to weaken their capacity to target vessels in the Red Sea. The U.S. and Britain claimed to have hit 36 Houthi targets during these strikes.
